Less than four months after opening its first local store in Virginia Beach, specialty grocer Whole Foods Market Inc. announced plans to open a second Hampton Roads location, this time in Newport News.

Whole Foods, popular for its array of organic and natural products, listed Newport News among 11 new leases Wednesday as part of its release of fiscal first-quarter financial results.

A 35,000-square-foot store is scheduled to open near Oyster Point Road and Jefferson Avenue sometime in 2015, Defausha Hampton, a Whole Foods spokeswoman, confirmed in an email Thursday.

The new store would stand about 40 miles from the Virginia Beach store on Laskin Road, which opened on Oct. 24. At 40,000 square feet, it is one of the larger new Whole Foods’ locations.

“We are excited to continue expanding and opening our doors in an area that has welcomed and allowed us to become part of the community,” Scott Allshouse, the company’s regional president, wrote in Hampton’s email.

For years, local food lovers wrote emails and Facebook posts begging the retailer, based in Austin, Texas, to come to Hampton Roads. Whole Foods announced plans in July 2011 for the Virginia Beach store.
