Whole Foods store to reflect different model

WEST AKRON — The new Whole Foods Market to be built in Akron will open as one of the company’s newer model of stores.

Company officials and the City of Akron announced May 4 the new store will be one of the first 365 by Whole Foods Market stores. The retail development, located at the former West Market Street site of West Point Market, was recently renamed West Market Street Station.

According to Whole Foods officials, the first of several 365 by Whole Foods Market stores planned to open over the next year will open later this month in Silver Lake, California. Designed to complement the company’s brand, 365 by Whole Foods Market will feature a curated mix of products that adhere to the company’s quality standards in a modern and streamlined retail environment, company officials said.

Whole Foods President Jeff Turnas explained the concept on the company’s website.

“With each store, we’re looking to curate a unique experience,” he said. “We’ve really dedicated ourselves to partnering with like-minded companies that are doing new and interesting things in their respective field to bring a truly unique shopping experience that complements our thoughtfully curated selection of foods.”

Through the Friends of 365 initiative, the store will include an opportunity for businesses and entrepreneurs that align with the company’s mission and standards to establish their own independent retail spaces within 365 by Whole Foods Market stores.

The Akron store is expected to open in spring 2017. Plans now call for the grocery store to be 30,000 square feet after it was originally announced as a 40,000-square-foot store.

Two more buildings in the development also will feature new retail businesses. So far, Pet People pet supplies store and Orangetheory Fitness are slated to occupy spaces there.

West Market Street Station is being developed by S.J. Collins Enterprises and will include about 50,000 square feet of commercial space. Passov Real Estate Group is leasing the space.
